Scattery Island Antrim the lighthouse was initially builtLocated on Scattery Island, an island in the Shannon Estuary, off the coast of Kilrush, County Clare. The last residents left the island in 1969. Built in 1872 beside a now disused fort. The initial design was for the lighthouse to be mounted on rails so it could be moved during firing exercises. However, the structure was damaged in a storm six months into the build and replaced with a more conventional tower.
