Karuizawa Wise Monkeys Caol Ila Makiyo’s profound connection to JapaneseProbably everyone knows the three wise monkeys (jap. sanbiki no saru), but only a few can say something more about the real meaning of this symbol and his origin. These three nice animals are a pictorial maxim, embodying the proverbial principle see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.
